Most DJs ever only work on and master one pair of "wheels of steel".
Not Lady D. This woman is one of the wonders of the world, rocking 2 sets of steel wheels. Her DJ decks. And her wheel chair.
Lady D: Mixing All Kinds of Wheels Like Hell
Representing the Netherlands, DJ Lady D is an awesome and talented 37-year-young DJ who loves to share her love of club, house and techno music. Despite being dealt by a number of rough hands in life, her positivity, her energy, and her passion for music continues to drive and keep her moving forward in life.
Those things right there are good reminders for all of us and how all of us should be living our lives. Our time is short and there's no use focusing on the bad. Ever.
Doing what you love, staying positive and seeing everything that the world throws at you as a blessing and an opportunity, rather than a curse or an obstacle, makes the world a better place.
Hell, I want my outlook on life to be as awesome as hers!
Staying High On Life, No Matter What
Why does all this positivity matter for this incredible DJ? Well, because Lady D is living life, mixing tracks, and being awesome all while experiencing the ride from a wheelchair. She is terminally ill with over more than 13 different diagnoses. Due to these combination of conditions, she can no longer work, walk and is able to take care of herself less and less.
Her talent and inspiration throughout everything she's been through is more than an inspiration to us. And she does what she can to entertain us, stay happy and healthy, and uses her talents to help her fund the things and support she needs to club with us day in and day out.
If you'd like to give back to a woman who has given her music communities so much, please consider helping her via her GoFundMe.
An Interview with Lady D
STL: What music got you started as a DJ?
LD: When I was just a few years old! I played with the stereo of my parents and all kinds of music, especially the ones with funky tunes in it, I liked a lot. When I was about 16 years old I started DJ'ing for real with Club and House music.
STL: What is your preferred music genre(s) to spin/mix?
LD: O dear, you really want the raw naughty personal vision or just a decent answer? Hahahaha, I always say about myself I'm a musical *naughty word insert here* because I love all kinds of music styles and even use these different styles of house, techno and club music in one mix.
STL: What is your favorite stream you have done?
LD: That's a difficult question to answer because almost any stream I do is a bit of my favorite. I still am flabbergasted by the impact I have when I do stream. I think I like it the most when people enjoy what I do and interact with me. And being raided and raiding others is also awesomely naughty during streams.
STL: What made you become the DJ you are today?
LD: For the long story we need a trilogy of books and films to tell all I've been through. To keep it simple I can keep it kind of short: I've seen and been through the dark sides of humanity and society, lost everything, family, friends, house, stuff and so on.
During all these events there was only one thing that kept me going, and that was my love and passion for music and the energy you can send and receive from it.
With that in mind I started playing again for the public after not doing so for a long time.
Sharing my story, my will to keep going and my funny naughty character combined in my music is what I do because I love it, it's my passion and I can inspire others to do more and get more out of life. That's fuel for my own engine and that's what you hear in my sets and makes me the DJ I am today.
STL: What is your favorite meal?
LD: That's easy, fast food! I like cheeseburgers the most and all kinds of sweet soft candy, hahaha.
STL: Who do you inspire to be most like?
LD: I always learned a lot from fellow DJs in the past and a few inspiring persons: Nina Kraviz and Carl Cox.
STL: Who else in your family is a musician?
LD: In my Twitch family a lot are and they are all good in their own ways.
STL: How would you describe the energy in your streams and chat?
LD: Free, respectful, open and with a naughty moisty humorous flavor over it.
STL: What is your favorite drink?
LD: Mojito is definitely my favorite!
STL: How much has Twitch changed over the COVID lockdown for you?
LD: After being in lockdown for more than a year I started to look for a platform where I could do what I wanted and connect with others. Twitch gave me that and even now, when I personally still am in lockdown, I can meet with others, talk, have fun and dance. Twitch changed a lot for me in a good way.
STL: What is your biggest change since becoming a Twitch DJ?
LD: That I once again can play my music in front of a crowd. It feels like I'm playing again in the clubs and venues when the streams have many viewers. Even when there are just a few I love to play music for others or just myself.
STL: If you could give any advice to a new streamer, what would it be?
LD: Keep doing what you like. Go for your passion and nothing else. Make it yours and own that vibe!
STL: How do you think things will change as lockdowns end and venues start to come back?
LD: I hope I can play again at clubs, festivals and other events. But my health also has an opinion about that so I will never leave Twitch and want to combine both as far as possible.
STL: If you are adding live shows to your Twitch line-ups, are you excited or nervous to add this change or go back?
LD: No, I'm not nervous about changing that. I regularly change my streaming dates or times because I have to visit my doctors or I'm just too tired or sick to play. I do get excited however when I do team up or before I start a stream and I'm very excited about what the future holds for me.
