PSYWENTZ, real name Wentzel Annandale, is a London-based DJ. He grew up in South Africa, spending his formative years in Bloemfontein, The City of Roses. During his time in South Africa, he also lived in Mossel Bay, a coastal town along the Garden Route.
At just eleven years old, PSYWENTZ began DJing during a time when the craft consisted of loading discs into a CD player. He was initially inspired by a Roxette (Joyride) tape that had been recorded from vinyl in the 90s, which he recalls repeatedly listening to in the car with his father. PSYWENTZ went on to spend his teenage years primarily DJing small house parties.
One of his earlier gigs from his twenties took place at a local nightclub called Camelot, which hosted a battle of the DJs. Despite challenges like non-existent sync buttons and his limited experience with beat matching, the gig was a total success, and PSYWENTZ placed third in the competition.
Not long after, PSYWENTZ secured another gig at Stones, a venue that he later pursued a residency with.
Since moving to London fifteen years ago, PSYWENTZ has played at renowned venues such as Club Aquarium, Egg London, and Pacha London. He currently resides in England’s capital city with his wife and two young sons.
In April 2021, PSYWENTZ pivoted to Twitch and never looked back. He found himself making friends, streaming for charity, and even pushing his own artistic boundaries by spinning fire poi. He plans to continue participating in more charity streams as the opportunities arise.
As suggested by his moniker, PSYWENTZ’s favorite genre to play during his streams is psychedelic trance (aka psytrance). He grew up following UK and South African-based NANO Records, primarily remembering the outdoor “Trance Party” scene. He’s also keen on the melodic side of psytrance and enjoys a vocal mix from time to time.
PSYWENTZ’s favorite artists include Infected Mushroom, Astrix, Bliss, GMS, 1200 Micrograms, Tristan, Avalon, 4i20, Interactive Noise, Rising Dust, and Shpongle. In fact, Infected Mushroom actually sparked his interest in the elusive psytrance genre. PSYWENTZ also enjoys listening to different genres like metal, classical, and reggae/dub.
Outside of DJing and family, PSYWENTZ has a passion for gardening and cooking. With a professional background in hospitality management, preparing food comes naturally to him. He loves spending his Sundays cooking with a glass of red wine in his hand.
On a more personal level, PSYWENTZ admires his parents, who have taught him so many valuable lessons about life. He hopes to, in turn, instill those values into his sons, one of whom is already talking about becoming a gamer.
